《开明英文读本》由林语堂编,丰子恺绘插图。出版伊始即成为当时最畅销的一套英文教材,几乎击垮此前畅销十年的《英语模范读本》。
《开明英文读本》缘起于1926年,林语堂对当时英文教本颇不满意,指出有的书中“通共不过四页,然就四页中荒谬绝伦之虞不只两打”(《翦拂集》),后在《字林西报》上每周一稿,批评各家的英文课本。1927年,与开明书店章锡琛先生计划编写一套中学英文课本,并请丰子恺先生为课本画插图。
叶公超先生曾说,在二十世纪的中国,他最佩服两个人的英文水平,一为宋美龄,一为林语堂。林语堂在书前的《学习英文要诀》中称,他的初衷就是要达到“把全句语法、语音及腔调整个学来”。正确发音得到重视,再加上“插图美、编排新” (陈原语),畅销即成必然。
丰子恺先生的插图也为这套教材增色不少。全套三本书中,虽然整幅的大图不多,然一幅一幅的小插图不可胜数。使得这套教材生趣盎然,极富情味。也因此成为诸多文化艺术爱好者翻阅收藏的读本。

作者林语堂深谙中英文,熟稔中西文化,因此这套教材的编写与众不同。教材自第一册到第三册难度递增,从最基础的字母、音标开始,进入对话、单句、短文,最后是长篇故事,其中穿插词汇、语法的讲解运用,是一套较为全面的英语教材。教授方法也别具一格,从简单日常生活入手,但并不是日常生活的简单演绎,而是通过联想、想象拓展英语的运用,很符合孩子的思维习惯,又能锻炼孩子想象力与创造力。第一读本编入十多首英国儿歌。第二、第三读本则以短、长篇文章为主,内容多选自中外经典故事,如《论语》、《史记》、《安徒生童话》、《希腊神话》等,使得这套教材有着非同一般的文化含量。
原书三册采用音标并不统一,今都按现行国际音标改正,采用英式发音。

林语堂(1895-1976),中国现代著名学者、文学家、语言学家。福建龙溪人(今漳州市)。美国哈佛大学文学硕士,德国莱比锡大学语言学博士,曾任北京大学教授、北京女子师范大学教务长和英文系主任、厦门大学文学院院长、联合国教科文组织美术与文学主任等职。其文化著作及长篇小说《吾国与吾民》、《风声鹤唳》、《孔子的智慧》、《生活的艺术》、《京华烟云》皆用英文写成,是我国现代兼具深厚中国古典文学功底与很高英文造诣的大家。
丰子恺(1898—1975),汉族,浙江崇德(今桐乡)人。中国现代画家、散文家、美术教育家、音乐教育家、漫画家和翻译家,是一位卓有成就的文艺大师,是中国引进“漫画”概念的第一人。
