威廉·莎士比亚(W. William Shakespeare,1564—1616),英国文学史上杰出的戏剧家、诗人。生于英国小镇,13岁家道中落,辍学谋生。23岁后赴伦敦开始戏剧活动。从剧院打杂做起,当过演员、导演、剧作家,最终成为环球剧院的股东之一,剧本蜚声各界,35岁便为家族取得了世袭贵族的称号。他一生创作过38部戏剧、155首十四行诗、2首长叙事诗和一些诗歌,作品被翻译成全球各种主要语言,剧本在全球的累计演出次数迄今无人能及。他的作品在西方文学界有着不可撼动的至高地位。


《罗密欧与朱丽叶》莎士比亚

本书讲述这样一个故事:意大利维洛那城两家世仇凯普莱特家和蒙太古家彼此纷争不断。蒙太古的儿子罗密欧与凯普莱特的女儿朱丽叶一见钟情,他们瞒过家人,在修道院劳伦斯神父的主持下举行了婚礼。当他们还沉浸于新婚快乐时,两家的冲突再次爆发,罗密欧杀死了朱丽叶的堂兄提伯尔特,因此遭到放逐。他听从神父劝告,当夜与朱丽叶告别,黎明之际逃往曼多亚。罗密欧走后不久,老凯普莱特要将朱丽叶嫁给帕里斯伯爵。在神父的帮助下,朱丽叶在和帕里斯举行婚礼前二十四小时服药假死,躲过纠缠。不明真相的罗密欧听到朱丽叶的死讯,悲痛欲绝,匆匆来到维洛那城,他杀死帕里斯伯爵,吻一下朱丽叶之后掏出毒药一饮而尽,倒在朱丽叶身旁死去。朱丽叶醒来见到死去的罗密欧,知道他是为了自己而服毒身亡,毫不犹豫地拔出罗密欧身上的剑自刎而死。悲剧发生后,两家从悲痛中觉醒,尽释前嫌,言归于好,并决定为这对情人塑造金像作为纪念。


《艰难时世》

作者简介

狄更斯(1812-1870),1812年生于英国的朴次茅斯。父亲过着没有节制的生活,负债累累。年幼的狄更斯被迫被送进一家皮鞋油店当学徒,饱尝了艰辛。狄更斯16岁时,父亲因债务被关进监狱。从此,他们的生活更为悲惨。工业革命一方面带来了19世纪前期英国大都市的繁荣,另一方面又带来了庶民社会的极端贫困和对童工的残酷剥削。尖锐的社会矛盾和不公正的社会制度使狄更斯决心改变自己的生活。15岁时,狄更斯在一家律师事务所当抄写员并学习速记,此后,又在报社任新闻记者。在《记事晨报》任记者时,狄更斯开始发表一些具有讽刺和幽默内容的短剧,主要反映伦敦的生活,逐渐有了名气。他了解城市底层人民的生活和风土人情,这些都体现在他热情洋溢的笔端。此后,他在不同的杂志社任编辑、主编和发行人,其间发表了几十部长篇和短篇小说,主要作品有《雾都孤儿》、《圣诞颂歌》、《大卫·科波菲尔》和《远大前程》等。

作者简介

萨克雷(1811-1863),英国作家。生于印度加尔各答。父亲为英国东印度公司税务员。四岁丧父,父亲去世后,六岁的萨克雷被送回英国受教育。1829年入剑桥大学三一学院接受系统教育,1830年离开剑桥去魏玛学德语,结识了歌德。八个月后回国学法律,但半途而废。1833年去巴黎学绘画,后担任伦敦《立宪报》驻巴黎记者。1937年返回英国,靠写稿谋生。正当他在事业上崭露头角时,妻子精神失常,东印度银行破产又使他损失大部分遗产。此后十几年,为抚养妻子女儿,他大量为杂志写作散文、书评、游记、小说等。早期作品主要有《巴利林登的命运》(1844)。1847年,《势利眼集》和《名利场》先后在《笨拙》杂志上连载。《名利场》奠定了萨克雷讽刺作家的地位,他因此叱咤文坛,与狄更斯齐名。此后,《彭登尼斯》、《亨利·埃斯蒙德》、《纽克姆一家》、《弗吉尼亚人》相继问世。19世纪50年代,萨克雷在剑桥、牛津、爱丁堡讲演,此后又应邀赴美讲演,讲演集分别于1853、1860年出版。此外他还写了不少诗歌和歌谣。1863年圣诞节前夕,萨克雷因心脏病发作猝死伦敦。


《白衣女人》

青年画师沃尔特·哈特赖特被聘到费尔利家当家庭教师,路上邂逅一个身穿白衣的女人,从谈话中得知她是从疯人院里逃出来的,出于同情,他帮她躲过了追踪她的人。哈特赖特发现,自己的女学生劳娜很像那个白衣女人。劳娜的父亲临终前将女儿许配给了珀西瓦尔爵士,但是,爵士看中的只是她的巨额财产。他与意大利的秘密革命团体中的一个叛徒福克斯合谋,害死了知道真相的白衣女人,并把她的尸体当做劳娜下葬,又把劳娜当做白衣女人送回疯人院,劳娜于惊吓之下患上失忆症。与劳娜真心相爱的哈特赖特挺身而出,开始了营救劳娜、揭穿珀西瓦尔阴谋诡计的行动。小说以画师沃尔特·哈特赖特的叙述开始,作者让事件的目击者轮流叙述他所知道的故事,这种手法为后代侦探小说创造了吸引读者的新形式。

作者简介

柯林斯(1824-1889),是英国小说家。他生于伦敦,父亲是个风景画家,他早年就读于海堡私立学校,12岁随父母移居意大利,15岁回到英国学习法律,学成后当了律师。1847年,其父逝世,23岁的他尝试写作,第一部作品是记叙其父生平的《威廉·柯林斯的一生》。1850年,他创作了第一部小说《罗马的陷落》。接着又写了《贝锡尔》、《捉迷藏》,并认识了当时著名的大作家狄更斯。在文学的熏陶下,他成为一个流行小说作家,他的不少作品在维多利亚时代最风行的杂志《家常话》上发表,如《日落以后》、《死亡的秘密》、《我的杂志》等等,他的代表作是《月亮宝石》、《白衣女人》和《新济良所》。另外,《可怜的芬区小姐》、《一个流浪汉的一生》、《黑袍》均有一定的影响。《月亮宝石》是威尔基·柯林斯创作巅峰时期的代表作,也是世界侦探小说史上的一部杰作。


《福尔赛世家》

长篇巨著《福尔赛世家》包括《有产业的人》、《骑虎》、《出租》。第一部《有产业的人》是三部中的一部,主要写福尔赛世家的家庭问题、爱情纠葛,使读者透过这些纠葛去体会广阔的社会和历史意义;《骑虎》写老乔里恩的儿子小乔里恩自妻子死后便与儿女共同生活,住在罗宾山庄……;《出租》写索米斯、芙蕾父女和伊琳、乔恩母予在一画廊意外相逢,两个年轻人认识后相爱了,这使双方父母都很尴尬。

作者简介

高尔斯华绥(1867-1933),英国小说家、剧作家。出身于一个富裕的资产阶级家庭,曾在牛津大学读法律,后放弃律师工作从事文学创作。30岁时发表处女作《天涯海角》,但一直到1904年《法利赛人》出版,才引起社会注意。1906年,高尔斯华绥完成长篇小说《有产业的人》。他被认为是英国文学中现实主义传统的优秀继承者。1932年,高尔斯华绥“因其描述的卓越艺术--这种艺术在《福尔赛世家》中达到高峰”而获得诺贝尔文学奖


《威克菲尔德的牧师》

本书是英国感伤主义的名作之一,这部名作既是社会小说,又是家庭小说。小说主人公普里姆罗斯博士以第1人称叙述他一家悲欢离合的经过。他们本属小康之家,待人宽厚,宾至如归。但过于天真,缺乏处世经验,屡遭欺凌。普里姆罗斯受经理他财产的商人之累,不幸破产,只得远离家乡去担任一个小教区的牧师。不久,长女奥利维亚为当地乡绅桑希尔诱骗后又遭遗弃。同时住宅失火,全家几乎无栖身之地,桑希尔又暗使奸计,使牧师无力还债而入狱;次女索菲娅险入歹徒之手:长子因找玷辱他家门风的桑希尔决斗而被捕。正当山穷水尽之时,幸得桑希尔的叔父威廉爵士搭救,绝处逢生。威廉爵士娶索菲娅为妻,取消了桑希尔继承他财产的权利,并把其中的三分之一划归奥利维亚,牧师一家得以团聚。小说一方面描写了社会现实的黑暗和罪恶,另一方面又创造了一幅纯朴、真诚、理想化了的田园家庭生活的图画以鼓舞读者。其中的主人公普里姆罗斯博士启发狄更斯创作小说《‘匹克威克外传》的主人公匹克威克的形象。哥尔德斯密斯的小说在其他方面也对狄更斯的创作发生过影响。

作者简介

哥尔德斯密斯(1730-1774),英国18世纪中叶杰出的散文家、诗人和戏剧家,他是塞缪尔·约翰逊和乔纳森·斯威夫特的朋友。霍勒斯·沃波尔给他起了个绰号叫“有灵感的蠢材”。他还对许多文学形式作出过重大的贡献。他创作的文学作品有:小说《威克菲尔德的牧师》,欢乐喜剧《委曲求全》,还有系列随笔《世界公民》,两首雅致诗歌,即《旅行者》和《荒村》等。
